A Month of Connection, Collaboration and Community Impact

Connection, Collaboration and Community Impact.

August was a month of international legal engagement and community connection for Justin Dowd, Principal Lawyer and Practice Leader in Sydney, with Justin representing Watts McCray Lawyers at two significant events.

From the Asia-Pacific region to Western Sydney, these events highlighted the importance of collaboration, access to justice and the legal profession’s role in supporting communities.

LAWASIA Environmental Law Conference, Port Moresby

From 18–21 August 2026, Justin attended the LAWASIA Environmental Law Conference in Port Moresby, Papua New Guinea.

The conference brought together more than 450 delegates from almost 30 countries, including legal professionals, judges, government representatives, scientists, and policymakers, to explore the role of the environmental rule of law in responding to climate and environmental challenges across the Asia-Pacific.

The four-day program examined the legal institutions, processes and protections needed to strengthen environmental law and climate-related decision-making, while considering the interests of both current and future generations.

Before the conference commenced, delegates had the opportunity to tour the newly completed Waigani National Court Complex, home to Papua New Guinea’s Supreme and National Courts. The visit provided an insight into the country’s evolving legal institutions and the importance of strong judicial systems in supporting access to justice.

The conference also provided an opportunity for legal professionals across the region to share knowledge, experiences and perspectives on some of the most pressing environmental challenges facing the Asia-Pacific.

Watts McCray Lawyers thanks LAWASIA, the PNG National Courts, the Law Society of Papua New Guinea, the Commonwealth Lawyers Association and the South Pacific Lawyers’ Association (SPLA) for bringing together such a diverse and accomplished group of professionals for an insightful and thought-provoking program.

Supporting Access to Justice in Western Sydney

Closer to home, Watts McCray continued its longstanding support of the Toongabbie Legal Centre (TLC) and its commitment to improving access to justice for the Western Sydney community.

For many years, Watts McCray Parramatta has supported TLC through financial contributions and by providing the time and expertise of our solicitors, who have volunteered to present CPD sessions and contribute to the Centre’s work.

On Sunday, 23 August, Justin attended a special ceremony marking an exciting milestone for TLC: the acquisition of vacant land in Toongabbie and the commencement of Stage 1 of the Justice Margaret Beazley Centre.

The new facility represents an important step forward for the Centre and will enable TLC to expand its legal advisory sessions and seminars, establish an affordable Children’s Contact Centre, and create further opportunities for law students to gain valuable frontline legal experience.

The dedication ceremony reflected the diversity and community spirit of Western Sydney, with representatives from eleven different faiths, five NSW State Members of Parliament, Mayor Dr Michelle Byrne, a former Watts McCray solicitor, and Ronan MacSweeney, President of the Law Society of NSW, among those attending.

Watts McCray was proudly represented by Justin Dowd and retired Watts McCray solicitor Chris Dunn.

Continuing to Make a Difference

From international discussions about environmental rule of law to grassroots initiatives supporting access to justice, these events demonstrate the many ways the legal profession can contribute beyond the traditional practice of law.

We are proud of Justin’s continued involvement in the profession and of Watts McCray’s longstanding commitment to supporting organisations that make a meaningful difference in the communities we serve.

Congratulations to the Toongabbie Legal Centre on this exciting next chapter. We look forward to seeing the Justice Margaret Beazley Centre take shape and the opportunities it will create for the Western Sydney community.
