Laura Tilt

Laura holds a number of academic qualifications including a combined Bachelor of  Laws and Criminology from the University of New South Wales, Masters in Criminology from the University of Oxford, and DPhil (PhD) in Criminology and Criminal Justice from the University of Oxford. Laura was admitted to the Supreme Court of New South Wales and High Court of Australia in 2014 and admitted to the Bar of England and Wales as a practicing barrister in 2018. After practicing as a barrister, Laura returned to Australia in 2022 to recommence practicing as a solicitor in New South Wales. Laura is also trained as a Collaborative Lawyer.

Due to Laura’s experience at the Bar, she is a highly skilled advocate with experience appearing for clients in a range of hearings in the Federal Circuit and Family Court of Australia, Local Courts and District Courts. Laura also regularly appears for clients in mediations and Court-based Dispute Resolution in both parenting and property matters. Laura ensures that her clients are comfortable throughout the process while also ensuring they achieve the best outcome possible.

Laura has experience in both criminal law and family law and as such is often instructed in family law matters where the two areas of law intersect. Laura has particular and significant experience with complex parenting matters involving serious family violence, mental health and addiction issues, and relocation. She works sensitively and with a significant amount of empathy for her clients, highlighted by her own experience as a single mother of young children.

Laura has also dealt with family law matters that cross jurisdictions, often assisted by her experience in the United Kingdom as well as Australia.

Laura is regularly instructed in property matters involving significant pools of assets, loans, trusts and businesses. She has drafted Binding Financial Agreements as well as Court Orders dealing with the division of matrimonial assets.

Laura is now a Senior Associate in Watts McCray’s Family Law team.

Outside of work, Laura enjoys spending time with her young twin sons, running, and reading.
